International Payment Methods for Commodity Trade: Choosing Terms That Work for Both Sides

An even-handed overview of payment methods in international trade — bank transfer, letter of credit, documentary collection and escrow — and how buyers and sellers can agree terms that protect both.

Every export transaction involves a trade-off between the buyer’s risk (paying before receiving goods) and the seller’s risk (shipping before being paid). There is no single best method. The right choice depends on how well the parties know each other, the order size, the countries involved and the banks available.

Common methods

MethodHow it worksWho carries more risk
Advance paymentBuyer pays before shipmentBuyer
Letter of credit (LC) at sightBuyer’s bank promises to pay against compliant documentsBalanced; both rely on banks and exact documents
Documentary collection (D/P)Banks release documents against paymentModerate; the seller keeps control of documents until payment
Documentary collection (D/A)Banks release documents against acceptance of a billSeller
Open accountSeller ships and buyer pays laterSeller
EscrowA neutral third party holds funds until agreed conditions are metBalanced

How to agree terms that suit both sides

  • Start with the relationship. For a first order, buyers and sellers often use a bank-backed method such as an LC at sight or an escrow arrangement, and move to simpler terms as trust grows.
  • Match the method to the order. Large containers may justify the cost of an LC; smaller trial orders may suit a different structure.
  • Write everything down. The payment method, amounts, timing, documents and who pays bank charges should appear in the proforma invoice or sales contract.
  • Use banks and providers you can verify. Use reputable banks and escrow providers, and verify any payment instructions by calling a known number before sending money.
  • Beware of changed bank details. Payment-instruction fraud is common in international trade; always confirm any change in bank details by phone.
